The development of the gut flora and immune defences of children

A child’s gut is not only responsible for digestion and the absorption of nutrients for growth but also for the functioning of the immune system. In fact, bacterial flora is an effective defensive barrier against pathogens. A child’s flora develops continuously: the gut is sterile during intrauterine life, its colonization begins at birth and is then gradually completed in the early years alongside the immune system.

Symptoms and causes of gut imbalance

70% of our immune system is located in the gut: the more stable the balance, the more capable to support the body’s defences, above all in children

How to defend them

Useful tips for supporting the immune defences of children.

include sources of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Carotenoids, Omega 3 fatty acids and probiotics in their diet

to strengthen the immune system.

make sure that they sleep for at least 12-13 hours a day, above all in the early years of life

a lack of sleep may reduce the immune defences of children and make them more susceptible to disease.

let them spend time in the open air

a little sun helps to increase the levels of the Vitamin D, which promotes the functioning of the immune system and is necessary for the normal growth and bone development in children.

avoid exposing them to passive smoking

small children breathe more quickly and inhale more toxins than an adult, so the more they are exposed to passive smoking the higher the risk of bronchitis, otitis, asthma and other respiratory diseases.

wash their hands frequently

this helps to keep germs and viruses away as they cause colds and flu.

It belongs to the genus of lactobacilli LACTOBACILLUS RHAMNOSUS 66-ATCC 53103 and is the most effective probiotic strain in supporting the immune defences. It is the most widely studied bacterium in the world and its beneficial effects are described and demonstrated in more than 800 scientific publications, of which over 200 are clinical studies on humans.

Its beneficial actions include:

strengthening of the body’s natural defences
support for the prevention of upper respiratory tract infections (1,2)
prevention of gastrointestinal infections (3,4) such as acute diarrhoea
reduction of the episodes of diarrhoea in children treated with oral antibiotics (5,6)
significant reduction of the risk of atopic dermatitis (7,8)
